Son, Edwin Binney and nephew, Harold Smith form partnership known as Binney
& Smith
Late 1880s Developed red oxide pigments used in painting
barns and carbon black used in inks, boots, stove polish, etc.

Easton, PA plant opened

Began producing slate pencils

Gold Medal at the Paris Exposition for their carbon black

Introduced An-Du-Septic white dustless blackboard chalk

Introduced Staonal marking crayons

Began selling Crayola wax crayons

Gold Medal at the St. Louis Worlds Fair for their An-Du-Septic chalk.
They used for "Gold Medal" seal and name for
over 50 years after this event.

Introduced Ruben's line (a top quality artists line after the artist Peter Paul
