History

A. Brown & Sons began as A. Brown in 1860 when Anthony Brown, the founder, established his booksellers and publishers business. John Brown, his son, began a School Outfitting Department after the passing of the Elementary Education Act (Foster Act) in Hull, UK. John began a partnership with his father in 1872 and initially the company was A. Brown & Son Ltd but as Anthony had six sons, some of which participated in his business, the name changed to A. Brown & Sons in 1905. Anthony Brown died in 1880 and John took over as the principal leader and chairman. Their location at Saville Street was destroyed in 1941 during a bombing raid. The company not only did publishing but also expanded into office and school supplies as well. They opened their stationary business in 1911 with a new facility at Dock St in Hull. Their ultimate demise is unknown. They seemed to have survived into the 1960s but I can find no trace of them any later.
