American Toy Works
Long Island, NY
1890s -1948

History

American Toy Works was founded by Adolph Weing in the 1890s.They were originally on 48 Allen St on the 36th floor. They moved locations to the Chatham Square building in May of 1903.American Toy Works head Adolph Wein was robbed of $1000 on Dec 22, 1933 when he stepped out of their building at 7-8 Chatham Square with the payroll cash. American Toy Works created a limited partnership in 1943 between Adolf & Lillie Wein and Adelaide Ziman. There was a bankruptcy case filed in 1950 to collaborate that the company went under in June of 1948 while in Oscar Gellerís leadership. In addition to games and toys, the company also made paint and crayon sets using licensed characters. One of their characters was Scrappy.Scrappy was the star of a cartoon series, produced by the Charles Mintz studio and released by Columbia from 1931-1941. Scrappy is somewhat unusual among 1930s cartoon characters in that he's a human boy (albeit a human boy with a striking resemblance to Mickey Mouse). It seems safe to assume that Hal Roach's "Our Gang" shorts, and possibly comic strips such as Gene Byrnes' Reg'lar Fellers, had some influence on the series. They werenít the only manufacturer to use Scrappy for a crayon box though.Pattersonís used him too.American Toy Works also used Skippy as one of their licensed characters for crayons in the mid-30s.He was another comic character from that era.Their Superman Paint sets are some of the most expensive crayon related products in the industry. An unused blue one went at auction for over $10,000!Others have sold for $1,300 and $800.
