Blackwell Wielandy Stationary Co.
St. Louis, MO
1901 - Current

History

On Dec 24, 1901 Frank H. Wielandy joined A. M. Blackwell and his brother, Paul J. Wielandy, in organizing what was still known as the Blackwell-Wielandy Book & Stationery Company.  In 1907 they constructed the Blackwell Wielandy building in St. Louis which remains to this day.  In June, 1910, they purchased the business of the John L. Boland Book & Stationery Company, of which Frank H. Wielandy had formerly been an employee.  Frank Wielandy passed away in June 1946 and Paul J. Wielandy in 1953.  An interesting bit of trivia is that one of his three children, Francis Hector Wielandy lived to be 91 and died on Sep 11, 2001; the same day as the World Trade Center disasters.  He has served as Vice President of the company during his lifetime.

Strangely, I can find no record of this company after the 1960s other than filings to keep the company name which occurred as recently as Jan 2012.  They currently have no live trademarks or patents so I'm not sure in what capacity they operate.

The Blue Jay name they trademarked dates back to 1906 although they didn't branch out into crayons until the 1930s.  Like all of their products, they didn't manufacture their own brands.  Instead, they had leading manufacturers make them.  In the case of crayons, they chose Binney & Smith Co. (now Crayola LLC).  One of the boxes even says "Made expressly for Blackwell Wielandy by Binney & Smith."  Their foray into the crayon business was short-lived and by WWII they longer subcontracted to have crayons made under the Blue Jay name.
