History

Coyle & Gilmore Company was founded by Joseph “Joe” P. Coyle.  He began in the stationery business in Chicago with his first company in 1892.  It was the Coyle Stationery Co.  From there he was a prominent salesperson for several other larger stationers covering much of the west coast.  In 1915 he organized the Coyle & Gilmore Company in New York.  Located at 122 Fifth Avenue, it was a famous stationer company.  Charles J. Grant joined the partnership in 1922 and they reorganized to become Coyle & Grant Company.  Mr Grant had the distinction as being the youngest president of a stationery company at the time; having run Marcus Ward Inc. before joining Coyle.  Unfortunately Mr. Coyle passed away later in 1922 unexpectedly.  The company continued operating under the Coyle & Grant name but to my knowledge, no other art sets were produced under the reorganization and so I’ve kept the focus to strictly Coyle & Gilmore time era where they were known to have produced stationery combined with crayons in sets.  Only one mention in periodicals is known at this time.
