History

TimothyEaton.jpgThe T. Eaton Company was named after its founder, Timothy Eaton.  He was born in Ireland in March 1834 but sailed to Canada with family members in 1862.  In Canada, he founded the beginnings of his retail empire in 1869 when he purchased an existing dry goods store in Toronto.  One of his daughters survived the famous sinking of the RMS Lusitania in 1915 although she lost her own daughter in that tragedy.  Timothy Eaton lived until 1907 when he died of Pneumonia.  His company passed on to his son, John Craig Eaton, and through him expanded Coast to Coast in Canada.

He was famous for two long standing traditions in his store(s):  One price with no haggling, money back guarantee.  In 1884 he branched out to mail order catalogs to allow remote town access to goods they couldn't get locally.

As with most large retail stores selling a variety of goods, Eaton had their own line of products known as "house brand".  They dabbled in their own line of crayon products for their stores and over the years they produced both an Eatons brand and a brand called "Punkinhead".

It's difficult to establish what years they produced crayons and what years they didn't.  There are likely catalogues to determine this but as I don't have access to any of them, this will have to be updated over time should new information be discovered.
