History

It is sort of humorous that for years I couldn’t find out any information about this company or brand.  But it was rather obvious once I did some more thorough research as it was right in plain sight as a not-so-obvious member of the crayon industry.  United Drug Co. was a consortium of private drug stores brought together by Louis K. Liggett in 1903.  He convinced each of the initial 40 drug stores to invest $4000 to the cooperative and sell products under the Rexall name.  This was a very early franchise model.  The company exists to this day but has been through name changes.  In 1946 they were United-Rexall Co. Inc. and by 1958 they were just Rexall.  Rexall declines in the late 1970s because their model couldn’t compete with the buying power of bigger chains.  Justin Whitlock Dart, formerly of the Walgreens drugstore chain, who took control of Boston-based United Drug Company in 1943, sold out his interest in the company in 1978.  The rest was sold to private investors.  Some of the franchise pharmacies stuck around and even still sold Rexall but their products and name dwindled until now it is but a fraction of what it once was.

As for crayons, these were probably added as special item to put into the store even though it was not part of their core product model.  These are likely from the 1920s or 1930s.  Only three crayon products are known.  The 8-color No S-773 box had a case of them discovered at one point and the value reflects the lower price compared to the larger 16-color box or other 8-color using their Rexall name.
