The Crayola No. 64 Box – A Chronological History

Part 2 – The Red Banner Original

This is a multi-part series of articles written to document the chronology of the Crayola No. 64 boxes from the original 1958 up to the current box.  These focus on both box design changes over the years as well as the colors contained within; what was added and removed from each design to the next.

The First Pre-Patent Red Banner

The Crayola No 64 box debuted to the public in April 1958 on the Captain Kangaroo children’s TV show.  Unfortunately, original tapings of these shows were never saved; a common practice in the early era of television.  For whatever reason, Crayola redesigned their box right after that to use a more distinct red banner instead of the narrower white arrow from the prototype original box.  Even with the Red Arrow box design there were several early changes to the box and color assortment.  Here was the first design:

There are several ways to identify this as being the second variation of the box and the first of the red banner designs.  First, this contained small arrows with “To Open” on the left side of the lid and “Pull” on the right side.  This was a consistent design feature from the original white arrow box.  Later designs dropped this wording in favor of larger arrows instead.  Second, on the back of the box this was a “Patent Pending” box only; indicating that this was one of only a couple of boxes to be put out prior to the patent of the crayon sharpener.

The patent number was assigned on October 28, 1958.  That meant that between April 1958 and Oct 1958 (or most likely a few months later to allow time to reprint the box and distribute) they produced several boxes and this first design red banner box was as short-lived as the white arrow prototype box.

The color line up for this box was:

APRICOT, AQUAMARINE, BITTERSWEET, BLACK, BLUE, BLUE GRAY, BLUE GREEN, BLUE VIOLET, BRICK RED, BRILLIANT ROSE, BROWN, BURNT ORANGE, BURNT SIENNA, CADET BLUE, CARNATION PINK, COPPER, CORNFLOWER, FLESH, FOREST GREEN, GOLD, GOLDEN ROD, GRAY, GREEN, GREEN BLUE, GREEN YELLOW, INDIAN RED, LAVENDER, LEMON YELLOW, LIGHT BLUE, MAHOGANY, MAIZE, MAROON, MELON, MIDNIGHT BLUE, MULBERRY, NAVY BLUE, OLIVE GREEN, ORANGE, ORANGE RED, ORANGE YELLOW, ORCHID, PERIWINKLE, PINE GREEN, PLUM, RAW SIENNA, RAW UMBER, RED, RED ORANGE, RED VIOLET, SALMON, SEA GREEN, SEPIA, SILVER, SKY BLUE, SPRING GREEN, TAN, THISTLE, VIOLET, VIOLET BLUE, VIOLET RED, WHITE, YELLOW, YELLOW GREEN, YELLOW ORANGE

There was only one change from the original color line up.  Instead of the color GOLDENROD this assortment used GOLDEN ROD.  The splitting of the word was acceptable since both spellings referenced the same plant origin but Crayola was inconsistent with this color.  The two word version only appeared in this particular designed box and then in the Crayola No 72 boxes that began to appear as a prototype in 1958 as well.  They used the two word version exclusively in the Crayola No 72 box clear up to 1976.  That variation was also found again in Europe several decades later.  There has been no documentation to explain the dual usage of the color.
