The Definitive History of the Colors of Crayola

Part 13 – The Revolutionary No. 64

The Many Variations of the Original No 64

 

Crayola began working on another major shift in their products and colors starting in 1955 after they had to address everything with their new incorporation.  The first things addressed were new wrapper and box assortment designs.  They had a new logo too.  After that came more fundamental color changes and the introduction of the new No. 64 assortment box; their new dazzling flagship assortment designed to catapult them into the new era with their usual stamp of dominance in the marketplace.

 

When Crayola introduced their largest box of crayons up to that, the No 64 box, in April of 1958 on the Captain Kangaroo children’s TV show, they clearly had a winning package on their hands.  They took their newly classic 1949 No 48 box with the flip-back lid design and expanded that into the wider box we are still using today.  In addition, they created a first among crayon boxes: the built in sharpener in the back.  It was an ingeniously simple idea that they quickly patented.  It was through this patent that we can begin to put together the earliest sequence of boxes too.  Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions is what the original box looked like.  The one used to replicate for the 40th anniversary of the product (a Canadian event, not in USA) back in 1998 was actually the second major design of the box and the third true redesign.

On the back of each of these boxes you can find either a “Patent Pending” (as is the case for all four designs) or a Patent Number (only in the case of the last design).  It’s important to know these minor box design changes because one of the colors introduced with the boxes that have the smaller arrows is only available in those boxes that have Patent Pending on it making it one of the most difficult to obtain Crayola named colors; more on that later.

 

Inside the original No. 64, we have the following crayons:  APRICOT, AQUAMARINE, BITTERSWEET, BLACK, BLUE, BLUE GRAY, BLUE GREEN, BLUE VIOLET, BRICK RED, BRILLIANT ROSE, BROWN, BURNT ORANGE, BURNT SIENNA, CADET BLUE, CARNATION PINK, COPPER, CORNFLOWER, FLESH, FOREST GREEN, GOLD, GOLDENROD, GRAY, GREEN, GREEN BLUE, GREEN YELLOW, INDIAN RED, LAVENDER, LEMON YELLOW, LIGHT BLUE, MAHOGANY, MAIZE, MAROON, MELON, MIDNIGHT BLUE, MULBERRY, NAVY BLUE, OLIVE GREEN, ORANGE, ORANGE RED, ORANGE YELLOW, ORCHID, PERIWINKLE, PINE GREEN, PLUM, RAW SIENNA, RAW UMBER, RED, RED ORANGE, RED VIOLET, SALMON, SEA GREEN, SEPIA, SKY BLUE, SILVER, SPRING GREEN, TAN, THISTLE, VIOLET, VIOLET BLUE, VIOLET RED, WHITE, YELLOW, YELLOW GREEN, YELLOW ORANGE.

Sixty-four colors!  Whew.  The most colors Crayola ever had active in their history up to this point were 61 named and 58 true.

 

At first glance, there were 31 new names here:  APRICOT, AQUAMARINE, BITTERSWEET, BLUE GRAY, BRICK RED, BURNT ORANGE, CADET BLUE, CARNATION PINK, CORNFLOWER, FOREST GREEN, GOLDENROD, GREEN RED, GREEN YELLOW, LIGHT BLUE, MAIZE, MAROON, MELON, MIDNIGHT BLUE, MULBERRY, NAVY BLUE, ORANGE RED, ORANGE YELLOW, ORCHID, PERIWINKLE, PINE GREEN, PLUM, SEA GREEN, SKY BLUE, SPRING GREEN, TAN and THISTLE.

 

Then there were a number of old names we haven’t seen for awhile; some for over 40 years:  BRILLIANT ROSE, COPPER, FLESH, LEMON YELLOW, RAW SIENNA and SEPIA.

 

Naturally, a thorough comparison was in order because as we’d learned from the past, anything was possible when they revamped their color line up.  Let’s look at the color families again to see what was added.

 

Brown color family:

Brown retained its true color as did Raw Umber, Burnt Sienna, Sepia and Mahogany but that’s as far as the similarities go for this family.  Raw Sienna was back as a named color but it had a new true color that was much browner than the original 1903 true color.  The new color was very close to the brown of 1949 but had a wee bit more orange in the color.  Meanwhile Apricot was a new named and true color.  At first I thought this might have been a revival of the original Raw Sienna true color but alas, there was much more orange in that new color than the original color ever had so I have to say that it wasn’t the same.  Flesh was back to its previous name (having changed to Pink Beige for a very brief period).  When I compared it to the original, it was much darker but my original Flesh was really waxy and difficult to get any color out of without using the whole crayon and I certainly didn’t want to impact my original crayon much (I usually color from the end to keep the tips intact and by doing so it doesn’t appear to have ever been used).  Given that reality, I cut this color some slack and kept it as the same true color.  We’ll call it Flesh with a tan!  Oh wait, there was also a new Tan color out this time around and it was both a new name and true color.

 

The Blue color family:

The Blue color family was a mess last time we looked at it.  They had increased the offerings up to a dozen different colors; many of which were nearly impossible to distinguish.  Indeed five of the colors seemed to be minor variations of turquoise when laid down on paper.  Looking at the crayon though one found an entirely different story.  Well, the good news was that they’d gotten rid of some of the indistinguishable colors but the bad news was that some still existed.  For example, Sky Blue and Light Blue were nearly indistinguishable from each other.  They were both new true colors too because they were much lighter than all the others.  However, that is probably why Light Blue disappeared from all but the very earliest of the No. 64 assortment boxes.  In fact, you can only find Light Blue in a “Patents Pending” version which makes it one of the most difficult colors to obtain.  Of course, this was a much different Light Blue than we originally saw prior to 1917.  That Light Blue was just a special renaming of Cobalt Blue that was used in the E.F. Charlton department stores.

Crayola calls out right in their 1958 Catalog that Prussian Blue was renamed Midnight Blue and looking at the color swatches, that appears to be true.  Blue was the same color and so was Blue Green and Turquoise Blue.  The rest weren’t quite as easy to figure out.  Take the twisted tale of Blue Violet and Violet Blue.  The true color that was Blue Violet in the 1930s and 1940s was now called Violet Blue.  Blue Violet inherited its new true color from Violet.  The rest of this color swapping was told in the Purple color family overview as these colors definitely cross between the family spectrums.

Navy Blue and Cornflower were both new named colors with new true colors.  Blue Green adopted Middle Blue Green’s true color this time around and the old Blue Green color didn’t make the migration.  Green Blue is also a new name and true color.  Cadet Blue is also a new named and true color although it looked fairly close to the original Celestial Blue from 1903.

Another color the Crayola catalog purports is that Aquamarine is the former Turquoise Blue.  They sort of got it right.  In reality, Turquoise Blue still existed in the assortment and Aquamarine replaced Light Turquoise Blue.  Another disappearance was Azure Blue which simplified the number of colors that were very turquoise-like but seemed a shame after they bothered to rename it in 1949.

Cerulean Blue ended its second short run as a color this time around and Cobalt Blue didn’t return; perhaps because it was too close in color to Blue.  Medium Blue was gone too.

The Purple color family:

There were so many new colors grouped into the purple family I had to break them into two rows.  Now according to Crayola in their 1958 catalog, Violet Red replaced Magenta.  They are close in color but not the same true color; Violet Red apparently was apparently both a new color name and true color.  The interesting thing is that Magenta was later included into the No. 64 box when they replaced Brilliant Rose so in effect, they had both of those colors in the box even though all their literature speaks to one being the replacement for the other.

Finishing up with the whole Blue Violet story that I started in the Blue color family what happened was that while Blue Violet inherited it’s new true color from Violet, the new Violet now had another true color but even that wasn’t new.  It was the same one they used back in the early 1930s.  Violet Blue looked like a new named and true color.

As they moved away from all of the “Light” and “Medium” naming from the 1940s, new names were created to take their place.  Medium Red Violet became Orchid.  Light Magenta became Thistle.  Rose Pink got renamed to Carnation Pink at this time too.

Plum was a new named and true color.  It was very close in color to the old Munsell Maximum Red Purple but didn’t have quite enough red.  Clearly they used a new true color on that one. 

Despite what others have said before, Brilliant Rose retained its true color and was in the very first version of this assortment. 

Mulberry and Periwinkle were brand new named and true colors though.

The Red color family:

Indian Red had to be about the most consistent color used other than perhaps Black and White with almost no variation throughout its first 55 years.  Maroon was a new color name but its true color came from the former Dark Red.  Brick Red on the other hand was both a new color name and true color.  Red and Salmon were the same from before.  Melon was a new named and true color as was Orange Red.  Red Orange and Orange remain the same.  Another new named and true color was Burnt Orange which really bridged the color spectrum between an orange and a brown.  Yellow Orange was a brand new true color that can be better observed from the Yellow color family where it started.  Clearly they finally put a lot more orange into that new true color.

 

The Yellow color family:

We can see that Gold Ochre got renamed Maize in this big color shuffle.  We’ve already discussed how Apricot was a new named and true color (discussed in the Brown color family review).  Goldenrod was borne from the “light” and “medium” renaming having come from Medium Yellow.  Spring Green was a new color that didn’t seem to come from any of the other ones as it carried a distinctively light sprinkling of green in it but not nearly as much as colors in the past.  Likewise, Green Yellow seemed to be a new named and true color as it didn’t map to any others.  Lemon Yellow made a comeback this time around.  Of course, the name hadn’t been used since 1910 and the original true color wasn’t what this one was because this true color came from Light Yellow which inherited that color from the original Yellow back in 1949 when they did a complete swap of colors.  Orange Yellow looked to be a new named and true color and Yellow hadn’t changed.

 

The Green color family:

Ok, according to Crayola, Dark Green was renamed to Pine Green.  That was true but it was slightly more convoluted.  Pine Green inherited the original Dark Green true color; the one they changed back in 1949.  The newer Dark Green got used for Forest Green. 

Yellow Green, Green and Olive Green all remained the same.  Light Green was renamed to Sea Green.

Through creative renaming and color inheritance Crayola didn’t have to formulate any new true colors for the green color family.

The Other color family:

Now Gray had already come along as a named replacement back in 1956 and the true color remained the same.  This time around Crayola had a new Gray variation with their Blue Gray color.  It was both a unique name and true color.

This also marks the return of all three metallic colors to an assortment.  These three hadn’t been seen together since 1915!  Copper was the longest gone having never been offered in bulk.  Silver and Gold remained in bulk for years but when WWII caused shortages in their color line, Gold disappeared for many years only to return in 1953 with a new true color; most likely due to a new source for their pigmentation.  Silver and Copper retained their original true colors.

As we would expect, Black and White remained unchanged.

So, following the original introduction box we had the following color line changes:

 

Apricot was a new named and true color.

Aquamarine was a new named color but got its true color from Light Turquoise Blue.

Azure Blue was discontinued.

Bittersweet was a new named and true color.

Blue Gray was a new named and true color.

Blue Green kept the same color name but used Middle Blue Green’s true color while its old true color was retired.

Blue Violet inherited a new true color from Violet.

Brick Red was a new named and true color.

Brilliant Rose came back after being discontinued back in 1956.

Burnt Orange was a new named and true color.

Cadet Blue was a new named and true color.
Carmine Red was discontinued.

Carnation Pink was a new named color but its true color came from Rose Pink.

Celestial Blue was discontinued back in 1944 but this officially marks that they weren’t bringing it back yet again.

Cerulean Blue was discontinued.

Cobalt Blue was discontinued.

Copper returned with its original true color.

Cornflower was a new named and true color.

Dark Green was no longer a named color but its most recent true color was used as Forest Green.

Dark Red was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Maroon.

Flesh was back as a named color having switched back from Pink Beige.

Forest Green was a new named color but its true color came from the most recent Dark Green.

Gold remained its original name and true color but is now back in an assortment and not just available in bulk.

Gold Ochre was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Maize.

Goldenrod was a new named color but its true color came from Medium Yellow.

Green Blue was a new named and true color.

Green Yellow was a new named and true color.

Lemon Yellow was back as the same named color but with a new true color that was inherited from Light Yellow.

Light Blue returned as a named color but with an entirely new true color.

Light Green was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Sea Green.

Light Magenta was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Thistle.

Light Turquoise Blue was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Aquamarine.

Light Yellow was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Lemon Yellow.

Maize was a new named color but its true color came from Gold Ochre.

Maroon was a new named color but its true color came from Dark Red.

Medium Blue was discontinued.

Medium Orange was discontinued.

Medium Red Violet was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Orchid.

Medium Rose was discontinued.

Medium Violet was discontinued.

Medium Yellow was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Goldenrod.

Melon was a new named and true color.

Middle Blue Green was no longer a named color but its true color was used at the next Blue Green’s true color.

Midnight Blue was a new named color but its true color came from Prussian Blue.

Mulberry was a new named and true color.

Navy Blue was a new named and true color.

Orange Red was a new named and true color.

Orange Yellow was a new named and true color.

Orchid was a new named color but its true color came from Medium Red Violet.

Periwinkle was a new named and true color.

Pine Green was a new named color but its true color came from the original Dark Green true color.

Pink Beige was no longer a named color but its true color went back to being Flesh (which is where it evolved from before Pink Beige.)

Plum was a new named and true color.

Prussian Blue was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Midnight Blue.

Raw Sienna is back as a named color again but has a new true color.

Rose Pink was no longer a named color but its true color was used as Carnation Pink.

Sea Green was a new named color but its true color came from Light Green.

Sepia was back on the color list having dropped from the list for many years.

Sky Blue was a new named and true color.

Spring Green was a new named and true color.

Tan was a new named and true color.

Thistle was a new named color but its true color came from Light Magenta.

Ultramarine Blue was discontinued.

Violet went back to their former true color from the 1930s and the true color they used up to this point went to Blue Violet as a new true color for that named color.

Violet Blue was a new named and true color.

Violet Red was a new named and true color.

Yellow Orange was the same named color but got a new true color.

 

That leaves us up from 49 to 66 active named and true colors when they debuted the first No. 64 assortment design.  The two colors not in the assortment were Magenta and Turquoise Blue.  After they did the switcheroo and ran with the patent box design they dropped Brilliant Rose and Light Blue from their color line up.

So, their minor tweaking changed the color line up:

 

Brilliant Rose was discontinued.

Light Blue was discontinued.

 

This brought their active named and true colors down to the 64 they advertised.
