Part 22 - Magic and Mystery

Magic Scents Final Performance

1996 was a relatively slow year concerning changes to the color list after the frenzy of the previous five years.By late 1995 however, Crayola decided to phase out the troubled Magic Scents specialty set. With numerous looks to the boxes and changes to the color names, perhaps the effort was just too convoluted. That wasnít the end of the concept though.Crayola would be back the following year with a brand new line featuring scented crayons.

Meanwhile, we lost all 28 of the color names off the active list from losing this set (orange, peach and strawberry used the same names and true colors as existing crayons so they didnít count).Technically Grape was probably replaced in 1994 but given all the mysteries surrounding the line, it was hard to be sure exactly when those were replaced so I left them on and just removed them all at once. This was:
Baby powder, Banana, Blueberry, Bubble gum, Cedar chest , Cherry, Chocolate, Coconut, Daffodil, Dirt, Earth, Eucalyptus, Fresh air, Grape, Jelly Bean, Leather jacket, Lemon, Licorice, Lilac, Lime, Lumber, New car, Pine, Rose, Shampoo, Smoke, Soap, Tulip

One Hundred Billionth Crayon Celebration

100billionth03

One of the biggest milestones and celebrations in Crayola history also occurred in 1996.This was the year that the factory hit a mind-staggering production count: one hundred billion crayons produced since the company began. To honor such a monumental achievement, Crayola held a big celebration and on February 6, 1996 they invited Fred Rogers, from the childrenís television Mr. Rogers neighborhood fame, to mold the celebrated crayon at their factory. The special color used was a new true color and color name called Blue Ribbon and was identified to be a Periwinkle Blue color (though Blue Periwinkle isnít an actual color, it approximates the blue color hue they used.)

Crayola Big Box (100th Billion) - 96 colors

They also produced a million of the special Blue Ribbon crayons and featured those in a special limited edition Crayola 96 Big Box. Each specially marked limited edition 96 Big Box included the commemorative blue ribbon crayon with a white crayon label. In addition, some of the blue ribbon crayons had an additional gold, silver or red foil-wrapped label game piece, which entitled the bearer to instant prizes. 10 gold label winners were eligible to participate in a random drawing on July 16, 1996 for the chance to be selected as the grand prize winner of the actual 100 Billionth Crayola crayon. All prizes had to be claimed by June 10, 1996.Darlene Martin, a grandmother from Port Orchid, WA won the contest by ending up with the actual 100 billionth crayon but she then sold it back to Crayola for a $100,000 bond and then they put the crayon in the Crayola Hall of Fame at their Crayola Factory location in Easton, PA.
