New Themes

Crayola didnt introduce any new specialty sets in 2002 but they did focus on a couple of theme sets for regional areas in the United States. The first of these was the Colors of Baltimore which featured eight color names pertaining to landmark events or places in the Baltimore area. These included:

Colors of Baltimore crayons.jpgCrayola Colors of Baltimore - 8 colors.jpgaquarium aqua used the true color for aquamarine

black eyed susan used the true color for dandelion

crabby red used the true color for red

Francis Scott Key lime used the true color for granny smith apple

go O's used the true color for orange

harbor lights used the true color for silver

iron man blue used the true color for blue

ravenous purple used the true color for violet (purple)

In doing this theme set, Crayola was inconsistent with their color naming conventions; opting to use upper case for Francis Scott Key and the Os but not doing so for Susan.

The second theme set was the Colors of Washington DC which also featured eight color names pertaining to landmark events or places in that area. This one included:

Colors of Washington crayons.jpgCrayola Colors of Washington DC - 8 colors.jpgcherry blossom used the true color for carnation pink

liberty blue used the true color for blue

Lincoln penny used the true color for brown

monument gray used the true color for gray

presidential seal gold used the true color for goldenrod

rockets red glare used the true color for maroon

U.S. Mint used the true color for shamrock

White House used the true color for white

Again we find that Lincoln, U.S. Mint and White House are all capitalized; perhaps distinguishing important national references required them to do so. I also would have thought Lincoln Penny would have used copper for its true color but that wasnt the case; an unintentional ironic highlight on the fact that the penny no longer contains any copper.

Goodbyes

In 2002 we saw a couple of short run sets leave the marketplace. The special-make up sets for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Philadelphia 76ers were gone right after their games as they werent ever available for retail sales. But the Americas Favorite set was gone by the end of 2002 and so was the Outer Space giveaway set and the Halloween sets.
