A New Color

2010 brought in another new decade for Crayola but little in the way of changes to their color history.  There was one exception though.  Crayola introduced a new crayon color into their redesigned No 64 box.  This promotion was done through Facebook as an online vote of four potential colors:  Confetti Green, One for Fun, Little Toy Blue, Giraffe Orange.

Crayola-Facebook-Vote.jpg

They partnered with Toys-R-Us to announce the winner:  One for Fun.  The new No. 64 box was sold as part of a set in Toys-R-Us stores although they did give away 250,000 boxes of the No. 64 on Black Friday in 2010.

Crayola No 64 (Fan Favorite) - 64 colors.jpg   One for All color 2010.jpg

They put the new One for Fun crayon into a special purple wrapper.  The color was essentially an off-white color that contained smatterings of other colors inside it to create a scribble effect of multiple colors.  Of course, as a color collector, I’d want to know if we’ll ever see any of the other three colors that weren’t selected.  I suspect that none of those colors were made into actual crayons since the real crayon is a tri-language wrapper and the advert looks to be just a mock crayon (no tri-language and the tip is facing the other way)

The Original Color

In 2011 Edward Binney was inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame on May 4th for his patent of Carbon Black; Crayola’s first color.  To commemorate that historic event, Crayola created a new commemorative crayon color called Carbon Black and packaged three of the crayons into a special wrapper and cellophane container that they gave out to every employee and one random Crayola fan.

Carbon Black crayon.jpg  Crayola Carbon Black - 3 colors.jpg

Though the crayon name is unique the true color uses their same Black that has been consistent since 1903.

For the color history, here were the changes for 2011:

Carbon Black was a new color name but its true color came from Black
