The Definitive History of the Colors of Crayola

Part 45 – Racial Reform

This is a multi-part series of articles written to tell the tale of the history of color names for Crayola.

Table of Contents, Previous Segment

By 2020 After the explosion of colors from 2019, we might have thought 2020 was going to be a slow year; especially considering that the COVID virus actually closed down Crayola for several weeks.  But they already had prepared for back to school and has some stuff come in early from 2019 that spilled over into 2020.

More Silly Scents

In late 2019 they added another Silly Scent box with unique color names but none of theee were on the gel crayons themselves so while interesting and new because of the dual ended multiple color names for them, they don’t go on the official list of named crayons since they aren’t on each crayon.  But from this point forward, I’m going to keep a separate list of these type of crayons on the alphabetical list at the bottom.  In the mean time, here were the colors:

Blueberry-Cherry, Coconut-Watermelon, Cotton Candy-Green Apple, Flower-Fresh Air, Lime-Lemon, Lollipop-Grape, Peanut Butter-Jelly, Pumpkin Pie-Ice Cream, Root Beer-Popcorn, Strawberry-Banana

More Specialty Crayons

Fortunately for us, Crayola already had a new specialty box ready for back to school for 2020.  This time they have revamped and renamed their old Mix-Up line of crayons.  We haven’t seen these since 1999.

In keeping with the previous rollout of specialty boxes, this too was a 24-color box size.

The box contains:

at the circus, birthday child, blizzard blast, campfire jamboree, carnival corn, clambake, cupcake sprinkles, flamingo festival, forth of july, garden soiree, lime-a-palooza, magenta fiesta, mermaid pageant, meteor shower, new year's eve, party fish, pool party, rain drops, rose parade, spring break, summertime, sunset luau, tweed jubilee, winter gala

Let’s take a closer look at the colors in this one:

At The Circus is a new color name and true color

Birthday Child is a new color name but the true color came from Baby’s Blanket

Blizzard Blast is a new color name and true color

Campfire Jamboree is a new color name but the true color came from Blazing Bonfire

Colors of the World

Crayola has been addressing racial concerns related to their coloring crayons ever since June Handler contacted them back in 1962 regarding their “Flesh” color and how her studies and observations in young children facilitated racial inequality.

Crayola responded back then by renaming it to Peach but it was merely a band aid to the problem and that problem would continue to grow beyond their band aid.  Over the years they made various attempts to reconcile and fix the issue.

The problem with these earlier attempts was that each time they simply tried to reuse existing crayon colors from their catalog of colors. There simply weren’t enough varieties to address the skin color of all the people on Earth.  So finally in 2020 they got serious about it and Crayola partnered with Victor Casale. Victor was the former chief chemist and managing director of Research & Development (R&D) for MAC cosmetics, co-founder and chief innovation officer of Cover FX, and currently CEO of MOB Beauty.  He had over 30 years of experience creating make-up foundation colors for global skin tones.  With his help, they formulated 24 unique skin colors and then added an additional 8 colors for hair and etc.  All of these are unique true colors.  They started from scratch.

“With the world growing more diverse than ever before, Crayola hopes our new Colors of the World crayons will increase representation and foster a greater sense of belonging and acceptance,” said Rich Wuerthele, the new CEO of Crayola who was hired on in January 2020 to lead the company. “We want the new Colors of the World crayons to advance inclusion within creativity and impact how kids express themselves.”

They launched two sizes.  One was a 24-color box which only contained the skin colors.  The other was the 32-color box which included the additional 8 colors for hair and eyes.

Let’s take a closer look at the colors in these new boxes:

First the 24-color:

Deep Almond, Deep Golden, Deep Rose, Deepest Almond, Extra Deep Almond, Extra Deep Golden, Extra Deep Rose, Extra Light Almond, Light Almond, Light Golden, Light Medium Almond, Light Medium Golden, Light Medium Rose, Light Rose, Medium Almond, Medium Deep Almond, Medium Deep Golden, Medium Deep Rose, Medium Golden, Very Deep Rose, Very Light Almond, Very Light Golden, Very Light Rose

Next the 32-color:

Black Hair, Blonde Hair, Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes, Brown Hair, Deep Almond, Deep Golden, Deep Rose, Deepest Almond, Extra Deep Almond, Extra Deep Golden, Green Eyes, Extra Deep Rose, Extra Light Almond, Hazel Eyes, Light Almond, Light Golden, Light Medium Almond, Light Medium Golden, Light Medium Rose, Light Rose, Medium Almond, Medium Deep Almond, Medium Deep Golden, Medium Deep Rose, Medium Golden, Red Hair, Very Deep Rose, Very Light Almond, Very Light Golden, Very Light Rose

Note that the only differences between the two boxes are the addition of 4 colors for hair and 4 colors for eyes in the 32-color box.

My contemporary collector and friend, Jenny, has also done an excellent recap of these boxes here:  Jenny's Crayon Collection - Focus on Colors of the World.  Her recap has actual color swatches for you to compare.  Rather than recreate that myself, I’ll direct you to her website.  She has the most amazing photos with her features.  Our websites may overlap but they compliment themselves.  I occasionally get permission to use one of her photos and likewise, she uses my information.  It’s a win-win for collectors.

Here’s what Crayola provided for the 24 skin colors:

Finally, here are the actual crayon colors for this assortment (courtesy of Jenny’s Crayon Collection):

And also the hair and eye colors:

Changes

For 2020 we only had additions.  Although 2019’s reintroduction of all the Specialty crayons replaced some of the previous specialty assortments, I’m waiting until 2021 to officially pull them off the list as they will still have inventory in stores until about that time.  It’s always a delayed response.  Meanwhile, here are the collective changes we have for 2020:
