Crayola Pick Your Pack - 24 colors.jpgCrayola "Pick Your Pack" series for Target stores

Back in the fall of 2011, Crayola put out some 8-color assortments as a test market item that went to a limited set of Target stores.  Crayola contracted several artists to produce art work for the set and at least three different artists were used on the actual production designs.

The theme for the set was "Pick your Pack" in which you could pick various 8-color assortments with different themes and different Crayola colors inside.  The concept was to pick a various box and then pick up an empty case that you could use the colors to create your own box and keep the crayons in.

As time went on in the series though, I saw less and less "Pick Your Pack" case boxes out on the stores and instead there seemed to only be the theme boxes.  What started with one idea eventually morphed into another marketing bonanza for Crayola as consumers and collectors went into a frenzy to acquire all of the different theme assortments available.

On a personal note...it's been difficult keeping up with this series.  Thanks to those who helped me keep my own personal set complete.  I may have one of the only fully complete sets out there.  Also, a special thank you to Jennifer Crowther for helping me list all of the colors in the boxes.  I didn't want to have to open all of them from the series as it takes a long time to do so and I had enough time to invest just in documenting this series.

2011 - The Prototypes

Back in November of 2011, Crayola put out the initial pilot of prototype assortment boxes for the series.  The art work came from at least three different artists.  Six of the initial boxes were of a "party" theme and were most likely in-house artists as the art work didn't include any sophisticated character drawings, mostly just graphics themed with two-dimensional artwork.  The other boxes were from another unknown artist as well but did include illustrated themes.

Of the six "party" theme boxes, two stand out as particularly rare:  Princess Party and Rock Star Party.  These two weren't found in a lot of the Target stores featuring the other boxes because they were pulled very quickly.  This makes them highly desirable for those trying to collect all of the boxes in the full series.  Right behind these two is the "All-Star Party" box.  It too wasn't as easy to find but they turned up more often than the other two.  It's interesting to note that there is apparently a version of the "Parrrty" box didn't come with the "Only at Target" logo in the bottom left of the box.  It's the only box I've ever seen that doesn't; an unusual oversight but given this was a pilot launch, mistakes were sometimes made and worked out later.  There is a version with it too so that might have just been a singular exception and unless I hear of more, I'm not going to document it as a true variation.  Mistakes are made.

The other initial pilot boxes were 8 boxes from an unknown artist.

Jan 2012 - The Full Launch

Very quickly, Crayola commissioned Joe Lacey to produce 16 boxes for their initial wide launch which I call the “first set”.  He did 16 different designs.

originaljoelaceyboxes.jpg

Seven of his initial designs were replacements and the rest were new to the series.  Here’s how the replacements went:

“Monster Mania” was designed to replace “Monster Party”

“Over the Rainbow” was designed to replace “Cupcake My Day” but they reissued “Cupcake My Day” anyway when the series got popular

“Pink Princess” was designed to replace “Princess Party”

“Pirate Treasure was designed to replace “Parrrty

“Rocker Girl” was designed to replace “Rock Star Party”

“Sports Fan” was designed to replace “All Star Party”

“Sweet Shop” was designed to replace “Sweet Party”

Joe Lacey is a freelance artist out of Southern California that has long been associated with Crayola and who did the majority of the box designs in this series as it continued.  His style is very recognizable on the various boxes.  They all have a similar 3-D type balloon lettering to the theme name on the box and rich detail to the artwork.  If you study the drawings, you'll also begin to recognize his workmanship.

Collectively, the initial launch, which I consider both the pilot and the first full store set, contained 30 different boxes.  All of these have 2011 copyright dates on them including the Joe Lacey set even though those didn’t make it into stores until 2012.  They had already printed the boxes in 2011.  They started with participating pilot Target stores and then went wide with a launch in Jan of 2012.  The first boxes to get discontinued were the "party" set.  Some of them never made it to the initial full launch which is why today they are much rarer than any of the other boxes and even the three that did were quickly discontinued.  Some did; most likely just to use up the existing inventory.

During the late spring and early summer of 2012, Crayola/Target had been discontinuing some of the boxes and adding others.  They added "Back to Basics" and discontinued  "Awesome Autum", "Dandy Candy", "Deep Blue Sea", "Gumball Blast",  "Monster Mania", "Spring Fling", "Sundae Sprinkles", and "Sweet Shop" from Joe’s set along along with "Jellybean Jumble", "Summertime", and "Winter Chillin'" from the initial pilot.  A majority of these, however, were reissued in the late summer 2012 as the series really took off.

One other interesting thing of note is that there is a mini-theme set featuring the seasons but they were split between two original pilot boxes (Summertime and Winter Chillin') and two of Joe's boxes (Awesome Autumn and Spring Fling).

Fall 2012 - The second set

In the fall of 2012, Crayola introduced another set of 12 boxes in response to the demand from consumers who were buying up the theme boxes if not for collecting sake then to provide a theme box for children and children at heart.  Joe got called in to design all of the new set.  Oddly enough, he had originally designed the "Back to Basics" box as well but they chose to go a different route and ended up with the design of a boy coloring.  All of these boxes in the second set have 2012 copyright dates.

Crayola Target Second Release Boxes.jpg

Rereleases and a third set

By the late spring of 2013 the series was still going strong.  Target's main retail competitor in the crayon market was Walmart and throughout the success of this series, they put out two sets of their own to compete.  Their first attempt was the “Meltdown set” and they were as elusive as the "party" versions of this set. Their second series with the Crayola mascot, Tip, was much more successful.

As Crayola launched a new set of 8 boxes in the summer of 2013, they made some design changes along the way which yielded variations for box collectors who collect everything.

Crayola Pick Your Pack 2013 change.jpg

They dropped the Target logo from the box and instead changed it to a plain "Pick your Pack" red circle.  It is interesting that they used a red circle, which are the colors of Target.  If the intent was to now sell the boxes in retailers other than Target, it wasn't apparent because nobody was finding the new boxes anywhere except in Target stores.

The first box to change was their "Back to Basics" box; what they refer to inside Crayola as their "Classic".  After that they introduced Joe's new seven boxes.

Pick Your Pack Summer 2013 set.jpg

Crayola also made some minor changes to the "non-toxic" statement at the bottom as well.  They moved that into a bi-lingual message in a very small font just below the Pick Your Pack symbol instead of having it be in English and buried within the crayon count on the right.  Everything else on the front was the same.  All of the third set of boxes have a 2013 copyright date.

As more of the older box designs were shipped out, they too incorporated the changes.  As of this writing in the late summer of 2013, Crayola had already changed five other of their earlier designs and at the same time created five new variations.  There were "Glitterati", "Pink Princess", "Fashionista", "Mermaid Shimmer" and "Dinosaur Roar".

Crayola Pick Your Pack 2013 variations.jpg

Here's a complete alphabetical rundown of every box and variation in the series.  Please note that while these have the discontinue dates, many of the boxes ran for longer as they depleted out the inventory:

1.  All-Star Party

Crayola All-Star Party.jpg

Variation:  "Only at Target" version

Product Code: 52-4329-0-200

Style: 52-4329

UPC: 0 71662 04329 2

Set:  Initial test market

Introduced:  Nov 2011

Discontinued:  Jan 2012

Designed by:  Unknown

Wrapper Types:  10, Metallic FX

Colors:  alloy orange (from Metallic FX) brick red, cerulean, fern, forest green, midnight blue, white, yellow orange

Description:

This was part of the six box set with a "party" theme.  This was discontinued around the winter of 2011/2012 and remains one of the three toughest boxes to find although not quite as hard as "Princess Party" and "Rock Star Party" are.  These remain highly sought after because they were only in participating Target stores for the initial pilot and were discontinued after that so they never went to the wider distribution like most of the other pilot launch boxes.  The box design was replaced by Joe Lacey’s “Sports Fan” box.

2.  Awesome Autumn

Crayola Awesome Autumn - 8 colors.jpg

Variation:  "Only at Target" version

Product Code: 52-4309-0-200

Colors:  burnt orange, fern, goldenrod, green, mahogany, maroon, raw sienna, sepia

Description:

This was one of the original 16 boxes designed by Joe Lacey and part of the nine new themes (the others were replacements).  He did his original artwork without the Crayola chevrons on the box and they were added by Crayola later before production.  This box was discontinued in the summer of 2012 just before the second set was introduced.   Outside of the party theme boxes, this is one of the more obscure boxes to find since it was discontinued early.

3.  Back to Basics

Description:

This was a box introduced later after the initial wide launch in early 2012 but before the second set of 12 came out in the fall of 2012.  Crayola referred to the box internally as "Classic" but nothing on the box references that name.  This was also one of the few boxes that the original design got changed.  It started as a Joe Lacey design with a theme that was somewhat similar to the "Bejeweled" box but Crayola did something different in the end.  They stopped making this variation of the box in Jul 2013 when they introduced the third set and changed the reference to Target on the box.

Colors:  cerulean, dandelion, fern, inchworm, orange, plum, spring green, white

Description:

This was one of the original 16 boxes Joe Lacey designed for the first full launch in all Target stores in Jan 2012. This was one of the seven replacement designs.  This box was a replacement for “Monster Party”.  This was originally discontinued in the late Spring 2012 and was one of the few that they didn't reissue when the series got really popular.  That does make it a little harder to obtain.

28.  Monster Party

Crayola Monster Party - 8 colors.jpg

Variation:  "Only at Target" version

Product Code: 52-4328-0-200

Style: 52-4328

UPC: 0 71662 04328 5

Set:  Initial test market

Introduced:  Nov 2011

Discontinued:  Feb/Mar 2012

Designed by:  Unknown

Wrapper Types:  10

Colors:  cerulean, dandelion, fern, inchworm, orange, plum, spring green, white

Description:

This was part of the six box set with a "party" theme.  This was discontinued right after the initial pilot.  Like the other party theme boxes, this one only made it to a few more stores than the participating ones in the test market but only to sell out existing inventory.  It was replaced by "Monster Mania" during the first wide release to all Target stores in Jan 2012.  Of note, the replacement designs have the exact same colors as their replaced boxes.  This box remains hard to find but not nearly as tough as "All Star Party", "Princess Party" and "Rock Star Party" are.  Those three remain highly sought after because they were only in participating Target stores for the initial pilot and were discontinued after that and they never had inventory enough to go to the wider distribution like most of the boxes.
